Madill athletes excel in track season opener - May 9, 2019
Athletes on the F.E. Madill School’s track and field team began their season with a competition at an early bird meet at St. James Secondary School in Guelph last week.
Over 30 Madill team members competed in the large meet, achieving some promising results.
Athletes on the Madill team earned 11 new personal-best performances as well as setting a new school benchmark, breaking an existing school record, and winning five first-place finishes.
Abigail Kraayenbrink, running in the Junior Girls 1,500-metre race, broke the school record with a time of 4:57.33. Teammate Steven Schraa set a new school benchmark in the Junior Boys 1,500-metre race with his first-place time of 4:32.43.
Ryan Jacklin, in his first year as a Senior Boy competitor, led the field in all three throwing events. Hanna Van Stuvenburg followed suit in the Senior Girls discus with a first place toss of 34.66 metres.
In the jumping pits, Austin Eadie leaped 6.15 metres in long jump to lead the competition.
The team travels next to Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge on May 3 to compete.
This meet is followed closely by an invitational at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton on May 7.
Conference championships are May 14-15 in Clinton and the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association championships are set for May 23-24 in London.
